WE'RE HIRING!

Apogee is looking for bright, responsible, dynamic and fun individuals with a wide-range of experiences and leadership skills to lead summer outdoor adventure trips for students ages 11-18. Must be passionate about the outdoors and working with young people. Trips take place across the U.S. and Canada in New England, Quebec, Montana, the Pacific Northwest, Italy, and the Caribbean. Whether you're interested in working behind the scenes or in the field on one of our hiking, biking, or service adventures, there is no more exciting or inspiring way to spend your summer.

We're currently accepting applications for a limited number of trip leaders and support staff for summer 2011. Must be at least 20 years old (19+ for support staff).

We pride ourselves on attracting the very best leaders in the business.  We work hard to take care of our leaders before, during and after the trip season.  Your pay will be in the top range of other teen-oriented outdoor adventure companies.  What you can expect to earn will depend on experience and number of trip days worked, but first year leaders can expect to make between $1400 and $1700.  We will also cover all of your food and lodging costs while you are working with us.

Leader Applications are available in PDF and WORD.

Please send your application and resume to:

Apogee Adventures

Application Deadline:  March 11, 2011

We'll contact you when we
receive your application. In-person interviews (mandatory) will be conducted in February and March (or earlier, if you are able to get to our office in Brunswick).  We'll be on the road in February and early March to conduct interviews at colleges throughout the Northeast.  We will have our college visits scheduled in early January - please call us or check this page for more information.  (Applicants from other locales are heartily welcomed - but we'll need to figure out a place to do an in-person interview before the application deadline.)

LEADERSHIP / LEADER TRAINING FAQS

So where am I going to be leading, anyway?  Can I apply to lead a specific trip?
Taking the questions in reverse order - you are more than welcome to request a specific trip in your application, but there is no guarantee that you will be hired to lead that trip.  While we occasionally send first-year leaders out West or to more distant locales, first-year leaders can usually expect to lead trips in the East.

When does the summer end?The specific date your summer ends will depend on which trip/s you are leading, but all you can expect to wrap up between the end of July and the first week in August.

Where is leader training?
Fabulous Brunswick, Maine

When does leader training start?
Leader training will start bright and early on the morning of Tuesday, June 14 in Brunswick.  You'll probably want to arrive sometime on Monday, the 14th.

What does leader training entail?
Leader training is an intense, focused combination of hard-skill and soft-skill training.  You'll learn how to deal with common problems on trip, learn about how to cook tasty, nutritious meals, and depending on what you are leading, get great mechanical training from biking professionals and/or re-visit the fundamentals of safe hiking and backcountry living.  After the "classroom" portion of your training is complete, you'll hit the road or the trails with your peers for a multi-day training trip in the field.  While it's fast-paced, most leaders would agree that leader training is a highlight of the summer.

Does Apogee provide food and housing during leader training, between trips, and after trips?
Yes.  And the food is darn good, too!

Is transportation provided to Brunswick, Maine?
No.  We will, however, very likely be able to pick you up at the airport or bus station if you're not bringing your car up.

Does Apogee provide equipment?
You will bring your own personal gear with you (clothing, sleeping bag, etc.).  Apogee provides tents for all leaders and panniers (bike saddlebags) for bike trip leaders. There are also a limited number of bikes available for leaders.

What should I pack?
Apogee will provide you with a detailed, trip-specific packing list before the summer begins.

Can I store my belongings while I'm away from Brunswick? Yes, there is a limited amount of space to store personal belongings while leaders are away.

Can I bring my car?
We certainly encourage car-pooling and public transportation, but yes, you will be able to leave your car in Brunswick while on trip.

LEADER TESTIMONIALS

Nick Smith - Montana Service Adventure / Northwest Explorer, '08; America Coast to Coast, '09 & '10
I’ve led trips across the some of the most scenic parts of the country (through the states of Montana, Arizona, and California to name a few). However, the trips themselves aren’t what make Apogee special. It’s the missions for organic group unity, wholesome challenge, and adventure that enhance these scenic locations into something truly unique. Everything from the community I feel during leader training at Kevin’s home in Brunswick to the level of communication and support that I’ve had with Chad in the deserts of Arizona has helped shape each Apogee moment into a “once in a lifetime” accomplishment. Additionally NOTHING has been more rewarding than working with the caliber of kids that Apogee draws. These students are a part of a family that is a summer home away from home for me; friends that I will be connected to for the rest of my life.
Rachel Baron - New England Mountains & Coast, '08; Vermont Hiker / Northwest Explorer, '09; Montana Service Adventure / Pacific Coast, '10
Spending a summer with Apogee means becoming part of a family. Whether playing on the swings with the Cashman boys during leader training or spending days off with other leaders, the Apogee staff quickly becomes family. The leaders share meals and stories, and really get to know and enjoy one another. On trip, this family atmosphere of inclusion and mutual respect is carried over. Most Apogee students come knowing only the names of the other students, but over the course of their trip will experience everything together. We bike, hike and do community service as a group, eat all of our meals together, and at the end of the day share our reflections on the day over dessert. One of the greatest parts of being an Apogee leader is watching your group progress from the somewhat awkward name-games and small talk on day one to a tight-knit family by the trip's end. On their final day, they'll hug, cry and part ways, but they now have an Apogee family.

For me, Apogee is all about the people.  From the first moment you are enveloped into the Apogee family, where Kevin, Gitta, Chad, and Susan are there to guide you, listen, and help. With the other leaders and the directors it feels like you are really a part of something special while you are training for the summer ahead. Coming out of this nurturing training environment and heading out on trip, you are energized and ready to foster the same community within your group of students.
Colby Tucker - Montana Service Adventure / New England Mountains & Coast, '09
A summer with Apogee is nothing less than extraordinary. From the very first moment you meet your leaders and fellow adventurers you’ll know that you are in an unforgettable time. It starts with the directors, Kevin and Chad, who are incredibly enthusiastic about each day of each trip. The leaders they hire share their insatiable passion for being outside, having a blast, and, most of all, making a positive impact on each student. While everyone loves having a great time, for the leaders at Apogee the personal growth of each student is the bottom line.
